How To Chit Seed Potatoes

Chitting potatoes is a fun activity to do. It is a process of encouraging the seed potatoes to sprout before planting. Do you really need to chit potatoes? Chitting gives you an earlier potato harvest of about two weeks and produces a larger crop.

Start chitting your potatoes from late January onward.

Place them with ‘eyes’ uppermost in seed trays or egg boxes.

Don’t forget to label each variety.

Keep potatoes in a cool place out of direct sunlight to avoid making them leggy.

Chitting takes approximately 4–6 weeks. Your potatoes are ready for planting when the shoots are 2cm long.

Take care not to damage the shoots when planting.

Plant them in mid-March to April when the soil temperature reaches about 6-10 degrees.
